Spalding Grammar School produced an excellent performance at Saturday’s ESAA National Track and Field Final at Bedford International Athletics Stadium.
The talented team of junior boys performed with distinction against the top athletic schools in the country to eventually finish eighth.
The Grammar School excelled on the track, while there were also notable performances in the field by a number of students.
After the track events the school was placed in an impressive third position – and that is great testament to the boys’ ability.
Perhaps the stand-out performance came from William Hughes, who comprehensively won the 200m in 24.4 seconds.
He was ably supported by his brother Charles, who finished second in his 100m heat and third in the javelin.
The middle distance runners again performed well, with Harry Burchnall winning his 800m heat in a time of 2.20mins and Keilin Spurdens finishing third in the 1,500m in 4.46mins.
Cameron Cladd again highlighted his potential with a second place finish in his 100m heat and a 4.80m long jump.
This was the first time that Spalding Grammar has reached the national final and the boys can be extremely proud of their performance.
They were competing against some of the best athletes in the country and they have learnt a great deal from the experience.
Next year this group of boys will move into the ‘inter’ category – where they will again be expected to be extremely competitive.
