South Holland and the Deepings MP Sir John Hayes is backing the Prime Minister in an attempt to get Brexit over the line.
The MP, knighted in November, had previously said he would not be voting for the proposal Theresa May originally brought before the Commons.
But last week he did vote with the Prime Minister’s proposal and said this week he believed a deal could still be done.
Speaking today (Tuesday), he said he had backed the PM because he felt Brexit had to be accomplished for the country and although not ideal, it was better than the potential no-deal the country faces now.
Sir John said he felt that the electorate “just wants us to get on with it”.
He was not in the House of Commons on Monday to vote on the four ‘indicative’ options that were rejected by MPs.
He said an urgent family health matter meant he could not be there, but he knew the options would fail and would have voted against them.
“We are determined to deliver Brexit. I am not happy about the possible no deal, but it is better than not leaving,” he said.
Sir John said there was the chance the DUP would back the PM in a future vote because the party had backed Brexit.
“I am against a second referendum and a customs union,” he said.
He voted against all eight of the indicative proposals put before the House of Commons last week.
