Defeats for both Long Sutton Ladies teams

Both of Long Sutton’s Ladies sides slipped to 3-1 defeats on the final weekend of the season.

The Ladies 1s travelled to the East Women’s League Division 2NW surprise package Bourne Deeping having secured their place in the division the week before.

Home side Bourne were straight on the front foot and Wallis in goal needed to be on her toes to smother a couple of dangerous situations.

Sutton began to assert themselves in the game, but it was no great surprise when Bourne Deeping took the lead with a well drilled short corner routine.

This young Sutton side have, however, showed a resilience in the last few weeks and did not let their heads drop. With Maisie Sullivan and Jess Burton having returned to the side, the defence, aided by Cooper and White held firm.

Just before the break a quick free hit from Jinx Walker was given to Rhian Goodge who smartly passed to Emmy Gittins who went two-on-one situation with the Bourne keeper and sister Connie who coolly slotted between the keeper’s legs to make it 1-1 at the break.

Bourne attacked strongly at the restart and a smart strike into the right hand netting gave Wallis no chance.

Sutton rallied again and with strong running from Amber Jones they were forcing the game into the Bourne half.

With the luxury of two subs Sutton piled on the pressure and were unfortunate not to be given the chance to equalise when a crude tackle in the D went unpunished

Bourne then won a short corner and a drag flick into the bottom right hand corner of the net finally took the wind out of Sutton’s sails.

Although disappointed to finish the season with a loss, Sutton can feel proud of their season in which a number of youngsters have acquitted themselves well.

* Long Sutton Ladies 2s endured a 3-1 defeat to Peterborough 4s in Division 4NW (N).
Hannah Baker scored the only goal of the game for Sutton in the defeat while Emma Grosvenor was named their player of the match.
