Table tennis round-up: Spalding and District League makes important changes

The Spalding and District Table Tennis League was hoping to kick-off its season programme this week with round one of the Moulton Shield.

However, in a change to usual practice due to some unresolved matters, there will be two weeks in which to complete it.

Currently, there are 14 teams split the two divisions (eight in the top tier and six in Division Two) with the slim possibility of another entering the second rung.

There are set to be 35 players, which is two down on the start of last season. Of those, however, one player didn’t turn out due to injury and others did not complete the season.

At present the line-ups are: Division One – South Holland, Jokers, Outsiders, Moulton SE, Mine’s a Pint, Nets n Edges, Underdogs and JDM. Division Two – Rusty Nails, TNC, Hit and Hope, Assassins, Hurricane Brothers and Deeping Lads.

The Cup draw is: Outsiders v Jokers, Rusty Nails v Moulton SE, Underdogs v JDM, South Holland v Hit and Hope, Nets n Edges v Assassins, Hurricane Brothers v Mine’s a Pint. TNC and Deeping Lads both have a bye.

In another change to usual practice, there will be no table assigned to matches – so that teams my start as soon as they are ready, making it easier, it is hoped, to fit in any rearranged fixtures.

On that subject, the rewritten rule states clearly that matches may only be postponed if all parties, including the match secretary, are in agreement with a new date set.

If that is not the case, teams will find that points will be awarded to those attending or games declared void.

Members are encouraged to ensure they have a copy, available from the committee.

Anyone wishing to try the sport will be most welcome at Spalding High School Sports Hall on a Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 10am at a cost of £4 for the evening.
