A Heritage Lincolnshire open day at Spalding Cemetery was so successful it has set the ball rolling on the potential for a whole new organisation.
As part of the county-wide open days, which let the public in on usually closed historic areas over two weekends in September, Spalding Cemetery’s Johnson Mausoleum was open and organisers Coun Elizabeth Sneath and Julia Knight, Ayscoughfee Hall museum manager, welcomed almost 230 visitors.
“So many people had seen the mausoleum over the years but never had the chance to go inside,” said Coun Sneath.
“It was a pleasure and we’re already planning next year’s event. We’ve got lots of ideas of how to progress it.”
One such idea is exploring setting up a Friends of the Cemetery group, after hearing visitors’ stories. Coun Sneath said for starters, herself and Julia would welcome photographs and anecdotes from the cemetery’s past.
