Junction to be looked at as part of new transport strategy for Holbeach

Improving Holbeach’s five way Market Hill junction is among the issues to be looked at as part of a new travel strategy for the town.

A direction on the future of transport in the town is to be unveiled in early 2019 with its stated aims to include prioritising walking and cycling in the town as well as promoting public transport.

A meeting with key personnel from the town to discuss the strategy was held on Thursday, September 13 at the National Centre for Food Manufacturing.

Attendees included district and parish councillors, local businesses and schools, county council highways officers, bus operators, the South Holland Internal Drainage Board and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP.

Holbeach county councillor Nick Worth said the five-way junction in the centre of town is something that would be looked at in particular.

“Following construction of the new A17/A151 Peppermint Roundabout last December, we’re now looking at how other sections of road in Holbeach could be improved,” he said. “One particular area that will be looked at is the five-way junction at the centre of town, which we’ve been talking about for decades.

“At peak times, traffic can be quite heavy, so my hope is that something radical can be done to improve this junction to make getting around town easier for not only drivers, but pedestrians, cyclists and others, too.

“The transport strategy that comes out of last week’s meeting is the next step towards achieving this.”

A county council spokesman said that the Holbeach transport strategy will aim to: “provide for traffic while reducing its negative impacts, promote public transport, prioritise walking and cycling, influence travel behaviour and support people travelling as part of their daily lives.”
