Hot weather sparks a number of fires

Fire crews from across the district have attended multiple incidents as the heatwave weather continues.

Spalding Fire Station has tweeted a warning about discarded cigarettes as grass verges continue to dry out.

The past week has proved a busy time for fire crews.

On Thursday, June 28, Spalding and Crowland fire crews attended a fire in the open at Sheppards Drove in Crowland. The fire caused “severe damage by fire to 100m of waste straw and grassland”, a spokesman said.

In the early hours of Thursday, Long Sutton and Spalding crews used one hose to extinguish a burning towing caravan and its contents in Holbeach.

One the same day building fire in Gosberton was attended by crews from Donington and Spalding.

The residents of the property on Belchmire Lane suffered smoke inhalation.

Late on Monday, July 2, a crew from Holbeach fire station attended reports of a vehicle fire at Hagbeach Gate, Whaplode. A hose reel jet was used to extinguish the blaze.

In Lutton, three crews attended a daytime fire spanning 80m x 40m at Church Lane. The fire was caused by the burning of garden waste on grassland and was extinguished using a hose reel and beaters.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue has issued a fact sheet to help prevent outdoor fires.

This includes completely extinguishing cigarettes and not throwing butts out of car windows.

They also advise disposable barbecues are put on bricks rather than directory onto grass, and regular barbecues should be on a hard, flat surface away from grass, shrubs and fences.

The fire service also suggests glass bottles shouldn’t be left lying on the ground as the sun’s rays reflect through the glass and can cause a fire.
