Four-some Netherton United see off Moulton Harrox in final thriller

MOULTON HARROX 2
NETHERTON UTD 4

Moulton Harrox’s season came to an end with a 4-2 PFA Senior Cup final defeat as winners Netherton United completed a remarkable quadruple.

All looked to be going to plan for Moulton when striker Marcus Parry fired them into a 29th-minute lead at Peterborough United’s ABAX Stadium on Thursday night.

They held that lead all the way up until the hour mark, before strikes from Ondre Odain (62), Tommy Randall (66) and ex-Pinchbeck United man Herbie Panting (71) gave Netherton a 3-1 lead.

Danny Maddison’s penalty gave Harrox hope with ten minutes to play, but Jack Barron clinched Netherton’s first-ever victory in the competition four minutes from time – ensuring Moulton had to settle for the runner-up role for a sixth time in their history.

Nigel Steadman’s side were always likely to be underdogs against a city side that had pipped them by six points in the race for the ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division title and had already beaten then three times during the season.

After Odain had seen an early goal ruled out for offside, Harrox took the lead when Parry turned an effort past Aaron Keir following a quickly-taken Declan Earth free-kick.

That lead was wiped out on 62 minutes when Odain equalised from close range following a cross from Randall on the right.

Not done there, Randall rose to head Netherton into the lead moments later following a Panting delivery.

A third goal in nine minutes followed when Panting finished off a Ryan Wood free-kick, to leave Moulton shell-shocked.

Steadman’s charges tried to summon their trademark team spirit when Maddison pulled one back from the penalty spot following a Mark Baines handball, but Barron’s late drive gave Netherton a fairy-tale finale to their memorable season.

For Moulton, they can still look back on a season that saw them crowned Lincs FA Junior Cup winners.

Harrox: Wilding, McGuire, Watkin, Cawthorne, Johnson, Townsend, King, Kisla (Maddison 75), Earth (Lambe-Hyner 84), Parry, Bradbury (Steadman 61). Not used: Groves, Farrell.
