Jive dance lessons a big hit at school

A dance class group has set children jiving at a Holbeach primary school famed for its diverse activities offerings.

“At the start of the school year, the pupils of William Stukeley Primary school didn’t know what jiving was,” said teacher Stewart Cuthbertson.

“Some staff members had been taking lessons with Claire and Neil Seabrook from Boston Jive but no one could have foreseen the impact that jiving has had on the children of our school.

“When staff began planning for the Stukeley University in the spring term, it was suggested that jive could be an option as a seminar for children who had aspirations of a career in the arts. Boston Jive kindly agreed to lead two seminars on a Friday afternoon for one term for children from Year 2 to Year 6. The two seminars introduced jive to 50 children and a school-wide love of jiving began,” said Mr Cuthbertson.

The first term was so successful, Boston Jive were asked back and demand swelled further.

“It really is brilliant to see all of the children learning a stroll and then enjoying dancing to fabulous music,” said Mr Cuthbertson. “The children tell us that they practise at home and feel healthier because of jiving.”

The staff and children put their new skills to good use too, with a special Sport Relief event.

“Boston Jive joined us for the morning and saw for themselves the impact of their work when over 160 children and staff members were all jiving at the same time!”

In the summer term, Boston Jive will run afterschool club for 40 pupils.
