Letters – Sports facilities need bringing up-to-date

I read with interest your front page report in The Voice, Thursday, March 15, regarding the possible overhaul of tatty and tired leisure facilities in South Holland.

I along with many other people would totally agree that sports and leisure facilities urgently need bringing into the 21st century. I hope this proposed review not only looks at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding, but under the wider umbrella of more local facilities like the changing and shower rooms that support the Monkshouse Playing Field.

This facility is used by the Sunday League football teams, including ladies football clubs.

This facility is a total shambles, and to think these clubs are charged a fee by South Holland District Council for its use.

I do appreciate the work that is undertaken by the ground staff who look after the pitch in all weather conditions, but they can only do their best with what they have when it comes to the changing facilities.

I have been using the field for many years and as I walk my dog on a Sunday morning I have spoken to many of the people involved with Sunday football and the general feeling is they are very disappointed with the run down facilities they have to use after their game.

I can recall South Holland District Council considering proposals for a new multi purpose sports facility out of town at a cost of £10 million.

At that time my opinion was that a total refurbishment of the Castle Complex would see tax payers’ money better spent.

But nearly a decade on from this proposal, what do people really want and what can SHDC provide?

Also, while the iron is hot and with the council approaching Sport England and other national, regional and local sports governing bodies, it’s time the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field along with its football facilities was brought into the 21st century.

Looking at what other areas of the country provide, South Holland has been merely treading water for many years and local people definitely deserve better.
