Public urged to report homeless people to charity

Anyone who sees someone sleeping rough in South Holland is being asked to report them to a charity that’s always available for calls.

P3 has a phone line that is constantly manned so the public can let it know of someone who is sleeping on the streets.

The charity then arranges for someone to head out to that person as soon as possible to see how they may be helped.

The call comes after South Holland district councillor Roger Gambba-Jones told the authority’s cabinet about his experiences over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, February 10-11.

He said of the pop-up tent sighted on the edge of Roman Bank: “It was practically in the road and it was clear someone was in there.

“It would only have taken someone to come round that corner too quick and the tent would have been gone.

“Much to my shame I didn’t know how to report it, especially at the weekend.”

Coun Christine Lawton spoke about the work that P3 do.

She said: “They have a 24-hour line and act countywide. They aim to get back to a report of a rough sleeper within 24 hours.”

P3 says of its service: “Our staff will work with each person to motivate them and encourage them to engage with us.

The help we offer includes not only accommodation, but also support to access other local providers and services to ensure each person has access to the full range of support that they need.”

The discussion came as the district council’s cabinet voted to adopt the Lincolnshire Homeless Strategy for 2017-21 which aims to provide support to the rising numbers of people who are sleeping rough for a wide range of reasons.

To report a rough sleeper to P3, the charity’s 24-hour freephone line is 0808 281 0280 or you can email them on [email protected]
