Petition launched as Spalding to Boston bus service is slashed

Concerns have been expressed about public transport links to several villages after a bus service was “substantially” cut.

The changes to bus operator Brylaine’s K59 Spalding to Boston service have come into effect particularly which also serves Donington, Quadring, Gosberton, Surfleet and Pinchbeck in South Holland.

District and parish councillor Jane King, said: “We’re worried an inadequate bus service will start isolating people.

“Many people can’t drive because of so many factors including age and illness.

“People need to get to A and B and it can be too far to get on their bike or walk.”

“We’re supposed to be cutting our carbon footprints and there is more and more housing being built.”

A statement from Brylaine said: “The timetable continues to support peak period travel for those in work and school and although it’s reduced, it still enables passengers to access both Spalding and Boston during the day to shop, visit friends or undertake medical appointments.

“Sadly, the reduction of the service has been caused by lack of ridership, off peak during mid week along with a lack of funding from Lincolnshire County Council to maintain a regularly scheduled service along the main route.”

Brylaine says it raised its issues with the route alongside the Spalding Town service to the county council in October.

It says that it only receives funding for its Saturday service from the authority but has pledged to continue to seek more.

A Lincolnshire County Council spokesman said: “Although there has been a reduction in the level of service it should meet the needs of most passengers.

A petition entitled Maintain the K59 Boston-Spalding Bus Service on change.org has so far been signed by over 800 people.
