Spalding speedster Andy Molsom has taken over at the top of the Super-Graduates driver standings after bagging his first win of the Caterham Graduates Racing Club season.
Molsom roared to glory at Donington Park, shattering the current lap record for his class in the process, as he replaced Toby Briant at the top of the championship.
Molsom yet again qualified in pole position for his class – but amazingly he started on the front row, just three tenths of a second off Luke Cooper’s time in the Mega-Graduate pole position.
He made a great start in the race, and retained second place into the first corner.
Molsom then made a great exit and took the lead of the main race from Cooper on the exit of Redgate. He lost the lead later round the circuit, only to retake first place going into the Esses.
After a fraught race, where Molsom never dropped below fifth on the road but was regularly fighting with the faster Mega-Graduate cars, he won his class and finished fourth on the road, as well as breaking the current lap record for his class.
Molsom said: “Donington Park was a great weekend.
“Pole position, the win and another lap record was fantastic, but to lead the main race was a great feeling.”
Prior to his Donington victory, Molsom picked up two second places at the previous round at Cadwell Park.
He led from pole position in both races, but was beaten on both occasions by his chief title rival Briant.
Molsom added: “Cadwell was a little disappointing, despite starting from pole position in both races.
“Having led virtually the whole race on Saturday, a slight distraction lost me the win, in what was a great race with Briant.”
The championship, which runs over eight weekends with a European summer round at Zandvoort in Holland, now heads to Croft for rounds eight and nine in early July.
