Having watched BBC’s Springwatch last Wednesday (June 7) in which co-presenter Chris Packham appealed to farmers and county councils to protect roadside verges from unnecessary cutting by flail mowers in order to preserve our valuable wildlife, I was saddened to read (Voice, June 8) that certain district councillors are calling for the county council to increase its budget for roadside maintenance so that the verges may be cut more frequently.
Our roadsides are a valuable corridor for wildflowers, insects and birds and as such need to be carefully preserved. Please try in your reporting of these matters to put forward the alternative view that it is not necessary or wise to trim our roadsides so harshly.
If people in Spalding want to cut the verges directly in front of their homes, then all well and good but please leave our country lanes to remain havens for our wildlife.
