Holbeach workshop helps pupils appreciate importance of preserving heritage sites

Holbeach Cemetery Chapels trustees organised a stained glass workshop for University Academy Holbeach students.

Eight 6th form art and foundation learner pupils were led by Strawberry Glass tutors Gillian and David Wing. They learnt about the traditional skills of stained glass making, using the copper-foil method, made famous by Louis Tiffany during the early part of the 20th century.
The group produced some attractive designs and found the intricate soldering techniques fascinating.

One student said: “I really enjoyed creating my stained glass object. It has taught me new skills which will support my future studies.”

The event was funded by Heritage Lottery. Later in the year construction students at UAH will be given the opportunity to participate in a stone masonry workshop.

A spokesman for the trust said: “We are fortunate to have the funding to help young people to learn about heritage skills and to understand the importance of preserving heritage sites such as the Victorian chapels in Holbeach.
“We hope that the afternoon workshop will have encouraged them to participate in future events that we organise.”
