Spalding IBC heading to national finals in Bristol after ladies get York revenge

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club had something of a mixed day on Saturday as they were represented in both the Yetton and Denny Cup national quarter-finals.

It was a day to remember for the ladies, who reached the semi-final – but the men narrowly missed out on joining them in the national finals.

The ladies travelled to the neutral venue of South Forest to play a strong York team, who beat them comfortably in last year’s quarter-final.

Revenge was sweet, with a thrilling comeback from the ladies towards the end.

Some ten shots behind with three ends to go across the match, they came alive and stunned York with a series of high scores to win 73-64.

A partisan crowd cheered the team on as they clinched a place in the national finals, to be held at Bristol IBC on Sunday, April 23.

They will face North Wilts in the last four.

For the men – who consistently reach the latter stages of the competition – it was heartbreak.

Playing at York, they narrowly missed out against Cumbria, going down by 73 shots to 64.

They had another great run and it’s only a matter of time before they go all the way in the competition.

  • Ladies’ rink scores: Rink one – Val Bowker, Maxine Coleman, Barbara Hurst and Gloria Haney won 17-15.

Rink two – Ruby Hill, Gill Needham, Louise Catchpole and Chelsea Tomlin won 25-17.

Rink three – Freda Lyon, Maisie Belding, Betty Deaton and Syliva Wade lost 14-15.

Rink four – Pat Crampton, Judy Jackson, Rebecca Simpson and Annie Dunham drew 17-17.

Reserves – Irene Blackman, Janet Staples & Julie Hicks.
