Holbeach United moved up into third place in the United Counties League Premier Division standings after a thrilling 5-4 home victory over Huntingdon Town on Wednesday night.
Five different goalscorers found the net for the Tigers who, despite having Jamie Stevens sent off for the second time this season, are still one of only two Premier Division sides with unbeaten league records.
Despite falling behind to a breakaway goal midway through the opening period, Holbeach responded with a stunning strike from Spencer Tinkler getting them back on level terms.
Jake Clitheroe then netted his eighth goal from as many games this season to give the Tigers a 2-1 half-time advantage.
Nick Jackson increased Holbeach’s lead after the restart with another superbly-executed strike to put the Tigers in control.
However, two quick-fires strikes from the visitors – one an own goal from Jackson – brought them unexpectedly back onto level terms.
A Josh Ford penalty after a bizarre Huntingdon hand-ball handed the initiative back to Holbeach who then added a fifth through Aaron Eyett.
However, Huntingdon hit back after being awarded a penalty of their own which resulted in Stevens’ dismissal.
The initial spot kick was saved by home goalkeeper Rick Drury, but the referee ordered a retake which was converted to set up a frantic finale.
Holbeach held out though to move within two points of table-toppers Peterborough Sports who have played a game more than Tom Roberts’ charges.
The Tigers are at home again on Saturday when Oadby Town visit Carter’s Park for a Premier Division clash.
