Scaling new heights for charity

An intrepid group of South Holland fundraisers hope to have raised around £1,000 for charity after climbing Ben Nevis.
The dozen climbers from Spalding, Cowbit and Donington decided to scale the 1,344-metre high mountain to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society for Dementia Research.
The idea was started and organised by Sue Wilkerson whose mum, Mary Woods, died from the illness.
Sue explained: “It’s so hard to understand this horrid disease and there needs to be more research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of dementia.
“It was heart-breaking to watch my mum change. In her final few weeks she was extremely well cared for by all the staff at Brun Lea in Pinchbeck.
“So we had this idea to climb Ben Nevis and raise as much sponsorship money as possible.”
The 12-strong group included family and friends who travelled to Scotland to tackle the tallest mountain in the United Kingdom.
Sue added: “We thought we had trained and were fit enough, but some found it easier than others.
“No-one was giving up though – we were doing it in memory of my mum.
“The climb was good therapy and the money raised will help to continue providing vital information, support and care to the rising number of families affected by dementia.
“We would like to thank everyone that has already sponsored us – we have been overwhelmed with the support.”
