Phil Robinson clinched Welland Yacht Club’s Commodore’s Points Series crown by the narrowest of margins on Sunday.
Ahead of the final two races, Gail Follington (laser radial) was in top spot ahead of Robinson (laser) and Paul Burton (phantom).
In race one, with a total of seven boats in six different classes taking to the water, it was imperative for the three in contention to capitalise on the points available.
This saw them break away early on as they all tried to build up enough of a lead over each other so their positions held once boat handicaps had been applied.
Burton and Robinson managed the gap to keep their positions on the water with first and second places respectively, but Follington didn’t quite have the time advantage and slipped back to fourth behind Lucy Burton once handicaps had been applied.
With the wind having picked up, race two again saw the three title contenders pull away to maximise their comparative times. And, with three of the midfield boats capsizing, the conditions started to favour the more experienced.
Once again Paul Burton emerged as the winner, with Robinson second ahead of Follington in third and Paul Wilson fourth.
With the best four results out of the six races counting, things were close.
But, after a double check of results, the overall series win went to Robinson by half a point from Follington, with Paul Burton taking third place two points further back.
