Last week’s historic vote to leave the European Union is a defining moment for our nation.
That it was such a decisive victory – with more than 17 million votes – shows that the British people, once again, know what’s best.
South Holland delivered one of the strongest ‘out’ votes in the country, and I met countless local people who told me they were fed up with immigration we can’t control, directives we can’t block and unelected, out-of- touch Eurocrats we can’t hold to account.
Now, we can look ahead to the future where Britain can once again find its voice in the world and shape its own destiny. The process of leaving will be challenging, taking some time, and so all of us who are delighted at the referendum’s outcome must be patient.
I was disappointed to see the Prime Minister resign, as I know he is a patriotic man who cares about our country, and were it not for him we wouldn’t have had this momentous referendum at all. The Government will start the procedure of our withdrawal, and in the meantime get on with the job of running the country as the people expect it to.
Britons have voted to reassert national sovereignty, to spend our money on our priorities, and decide our own migration policy. I’m thrilled that the people have chosen hope over fear – bravely ignoring the doom-mongers and outdated Europhiles. The European Union belongs to yesterday; tomorrow belongs to Britain.
