Injured Wilson eyes a return to the track next season after returning home

Kirton racer Ben Wilson is eyeing a return to action next season having been released from Addenbrooks Hospital.

The Lincolnshire pace ace is back at home as he continues his recovery from a serious crash in Superstock practice for the North West 200 three weeks ago.

Wilson was initially treated in Northern Ireland before being flown to Addenbrooks to see the consultant that successfully treated Ian Hutchinson.

The consultant had a look at his injury and immediately agreed to treat Wilson, who suffered a compound fracture of his femur in the crash.

He had an operation to stabilise the femur, which was badly broken, while plates, rods and screws were fitted. After a few days recovery, Wilson was able to leave hospital for home.

He will return to Addenbrooks in two weeks’ time for a check up and to prepare for the next operation which will involve putting an external fixation cage around the upper leg. This is likely to remain in place for a further six month – after which the surgeon will decide if further surgery is required.

An upbeat Wilson said: “The consultant is the best in the country – and if he says he can fix my leg, then he will. I have every confidence in him and, although it’s going to take quite a while, I am already planning for a return to racing at the beginning of next season.

“I am so grateful to everyone who has helped me after my accident as they moved heaven and earth to get me back to the mainland so quickly and into the care of the consultant at Addenbrooks.

“Special thanks go to my partner Louise who is my rock. She is so supportive and has to put up with my impatience day in day out!”
