Lucy springs a surprise with victory in Welland Yacht Club pursuit

The Sunday sun made for another great day of sailing at Welland Yacht Club.

The morning action was a points series race, with ten boats competing.

As has been the norm in recent weeks, Tom Bell (laser) took top spot from Andy Prior (laser) in second, with Paul Burton (phantom) behind them in third.

The afternoon boasted two pursuit races, with personal handicaps used to devise a staggered start. The race comes to a climax after one hour.

The range of boats and ability meant that Lucy Burton started first – while her dad Paul got under way last, some 17 minutes later.

Pursuit one was won by Bell (laser), with Martin Cook (solo) second and Brian Cobb (Europe) third.

However, pursuit two threw up a surprise result. With the full rig lasers getting caught up in the field, Lucy Burton led from start to finish ahead of Shelley Woolridge (laser radial) and Cook (solo).

  • This Sunday is Welland’s open day (11.30am-4pm). All welcome.
