Matt’s the new main man at Long Sutton after Goddard’s surprise resignation

Matt Cawthorn has taken over as player/manager at Long Sutton Athletic following the resignation of Danny Goddard.

It is believed that Goddard, who only took over in the summer, quit after another manager approached the Magpies about replacing him.

Cawthorn was initially torn about stepping up from assistant boss due to his loyalty to Goddard, but the striker has now agreed to take charge for the final seven PDFL Division One games of the season.

He said: “I didn’t want Danny to think I was being disloyal, so I spoke to him before deciding to take the job on. I loved every minute of the time I spent working with him.

“But I’m now very much looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m hoping that the players give me their all for the final seven games and that we get some points on the board.

“That would give me a chance of being asked to carry on next season, when I’d look to rebuild.”

Cawthorn’s first game in charge is at home to Netherton Reserves on Saturday (2pm).

He could have an exciting new face in the squad, with striker Tommy Treacher joining the Magpies from Holbeach United.

The former UCL Premier Division winner is unlikely to feature every week due to availability issues, but will add a real goal threat when he does.

Cawthorn added: “Tommy trained with us this week. I grew up with him and we won everything together in youth football.

“Hopefully he can fire us to some points.”
