Tydd St Mary saved by Lowe’s late leveller at Stamford Lions

A late penalty rebound from Tim Lowe earned Tydd St Mary a 2-2 draw at ChromaSport PDFL Division Three high-fliers Stamford Lions Reserves on Saturday.

The Saints started the brighter and when Phil Franklin’s fierce shot was superbly saved on 25 minutes, they were awarded a corner. Scott Pemberton had a swing at connection with the delivery but it fell nicely for Lowe to lash home from close range.

It was no more than Tydd deserved, as they bossed the half and created chances galore.

Nick Reims’ flicked near-post shot hit the upright, while Tydd rued other missed first-half chances.

However, the Lions roared out of the blocks in the second half and levelled the game from a corner of their own within a minute of the restart.

On 56 minutes, Stamford – now very much on top – took the lead, again from a corner, and they looked good value for their advantage.

With just eight minutes remaining a great through ball was chased by sub Nick Ainslie, who was clipped in the box for a penalty.

Lowe’s spot kick was saved, but he slammed home the rebound to secure a draw.

Tydd boss Carl Wilson was subdued after the match and said: “On reflection we take a point and move on.

“Good first half, poor second half. It was the reverse for them.

“Two good sides that cancelled each other out.

“We can beat ourselves up as much as we like but at the end of the day we can do better than that.”
