LETTER: Now I’m picking up after others

On Sunday, February 7 I decided to go against my own principles and clear up other people’s rubbish.

This was in my own street, Carrington Road, Spalding. I just felt I had enough of seeing such a mess along the street in my local neighbourhood.

I do appreciate that a group of people have embraced the initiative to clean up several areas of the town centre, but I thought I would start in my own area first before I spread my workload to other areas of my ward.

There may be a shortage of litter bins in my local area, but I have to say that the cause of all the litter has to come down to the total lack of respect that people have for where they live.

Only recently reported, Insp Reeves said street drinking was getting under control and it was the public who had the perception that it was a major problem in town.

Well, during my clean up session I collected many empty beer cans that were discarded onto the street after drinking the contents.

If we cannot afford a better police presence on our streets we cannot impose stiffer penalties for offenders who continue to disrespect our town.

I was brought up in Spalding and at a very young age I knew what to do with my rubbish, bin it or take it home with me.

How times have changed, now I am taking other people’s rubbish home.
