A Mexican national always ensures the ancient Day of the Dead festival is celebrated in Moulton Chapel.
The November 2 event, which has similarities to Halloween, originated in the North American country.
Laura McCoubrey, of Braybrooks Way, said: “My family was always interested in our history and indigenous culture and I grew up learning about this and other festivities whose origins are also hundreds of years old.”
When Laura moved to England she wanted to share that history with others as well as create and maintain something of her heritage, keeping in touch with her roots and celebrating the lives of others.
She said: “Each year I have built a small Ofrenda (or offering) at home that features names and photographs of those remembered together with a mixture of what might be found in a typical Mexican home; such as bottles of drink, typical foodstuffs, and varieties of flowers as well as some of the more humorous aspect that Mexicans use.
“The representation of skulls and skeletons in pottery, paper cuts and even sugar enjoying music and dancing is as much a part of the altar as the more sombre aspect of remembrance.”
