‘Chuffed’ Goddard feels Long Sutton Athletic finally got the result they deserve

Long Sutton Athletic finally got the result their recent form deserved as they saw off hosts Netherton United Reserves 2-1 on Saturday.

Dave Wilson put the Magpies ahead in the ChromaSport Peterborough League Division One clash with a side-footed finish following a swivel turn on the edge of the box.

Wilson’s strike partner Matt Cawthorn then headed home a deserved second from a corner, before Iszaak Setchfield’s late goal made for a nervy final ten minutes.

Sutton player/boss Danny Goddard, who had midfielder Wayne Congreve playing as an emergency keeper, was delighted with his side’s showing on Netherton’s 3G pitch.

He said: “I’m chuffed to bits. We’ve been building towards this result.

“Half of the lads were worried about the 3G beforehand, but in the end we made great use of it and it suited us.

“In truth, we could have scored five – but I’m just delighted with the win. We wanted to keep a clean sheet, but they really bombarded us at the end to be fair.”

Sutton host Warboys Town in their next clash on Saturday (2pm).

Sutton: Congreve, Wayman, R Ward, Fitch, M Ward, Allen, Gomes, J Ward, Wilson, Cawthorn, Moses. Subs used: Belakov, Goddard, Nicholson.

  • Long Sutton under-16s were beaten 6-0 at Glinton and Northborough under-16s on Sunday.

Sutton were totally dominated from the off in a poor all-round display.

The goals came from Ryan Anthony (2), Jack Butler, Thomas Knox, Kane Clow and a Jordan Harvey (OG).
