A series of workshops aimed at bringing history to life for young people are being put in Spalding over the next few weeks.
The fun hands-on sessions are being hosted by the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society and will focus on local folklore and the Stuarts.
Two of the events will be in the forthcoming half term break and all will be at Spalding Baptist Church, on Swan Street.
The first History Hunters – Fenland Folklore and Legends is from 1.30pm on Sunday, October 25.
It will give children aged five and over the chance to uncover intriguing facts, learn new skills, solve puzzles and earn badges.
Activities for this session include taking a closer look at Allhallowtide (or All Souls’ Tide), baking soul cakes, making a punkie or Hoberdy’s (lan tern) hearing a fen ghost story and discovering more about our local saints.
From 10am to 2pm on Tuesday, October 27, there will be a free drop in session entitled The Smashing Stuarts.
Visitors can find out more about the plague, the Great Fire of London and the Civil War and about the lives of people under the Stuarts as well as making sweet marchpane.
A second Fenland Folklore and Legends event will take place on Sunday November 22, from 1.30pm.
Participants can make a Green Man head and hear spooky tales of Boggarts, Will-o’-the-wisps, and Fen Tigers (the myth and the reality).
Entry to both the Folklore sessions is £3 per child.
Pre-booking is encouraged for all events and can be done via the website at www.sgsoc.org/forthcoming-events or email [email protected]
