A councillor has criticised those who look after the River Welland as Spalding’s Water Taxi remains stuck and unable to get out.
It’s been unable to leave its base since August 29 due to the build up of weeds around Little London Bridge.
Anthony Grunwell, who operates the attraction ferrying people between the town centre and Springfields, says after discussions with the Environmental Agency he’s hoping to be back open on Tuesday (September 15).
A spokesman for the Environment Agency told The Voice that its work for ensuring rivers are navigable ‘are delivered on a risk-based basis’ considering ‘resources available’.
They also said that it is ‘funded to remove obstructions to reduce the flood risk to local communities’ and that ‘weed and other floating vegetation rarely pose a significant flood risk’.
“We understand people’s love of this river and are working with our partners to remove the blockage and resolve the issue,” the spokesman said.
“People should report any environmental issues using our 24/7 hotline on 0800 807060.”
Coun Mark Le Sage spoke out after recently visiting Mr Grunwell.
“It’s so disappointing for all concerned, having worked so hard to rebuild the business after it was unable to operate for a whole season following the damage to the bank and subsequent lack of water in the Welland,”
Coun Le Sage said. “Here we are again, a river full of weeds that are starting to rot and block access to the Welland for the water taxi.
“The taxi pilots aren’t getting paid and it ultimately means less people are visiting Spalding so footfall will be affected causing more financial issues for businesses.
“As you drive into Spalding it’s an appalling view and is now starting to smell as the weeds break down.
“The weeds need to be craned out not dispersed further down the river which will just cause a blockage in town or in the Coronation Channel.
“I hope those authorities involved in the management and maintenance of our waterways act soon so that we can see our beloved water taxi back in operation before the end of the season.”
