A plaque acknowledging the long service of a Spalding signalman has been resited at the town’s railway station.
The plaque in memory of John Lee (known as Jack) was on the Winsover Road signal box, where he spent much of his 51 years’ service to British Rail. It was bought by Jack’s family and put up shortly after his death in 2006.
When the signal box was demolished earlier this year, Network Rail was keen to preserve the plaque and managed to trace Jack’s family through The Voice.
Grandson Nigel Lee thanked the paper, adding: “We’re pleased that it’s been placed in such a prominent position at the station, which is a listed building, so hopefully the plaque will remain forever.”
Richard Smith, project director for Network Rail’s GNGE modernisation scheme, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to work with Signalman Jack Lee’s family and our colleagues in East Midlands Trains to recover and restore the plaque commemorating a remarkable career and to see it placed in such an appropriate new home at Spalding station.”
