Bash to make Becky memories

Holbeach residents are hosting an event to help a woman with cancer make memories with her family and cover the cost of expenses during treatment.

Becky Brothwell (51) (pictured) was shocked to be diagnosed with anal cancer in February. She later learned It had also spread to her liver and lungs.

After a wait that Becky is seeking answers too, she will begin radiotherapy on May 29.

She will have two weeks of treatment before starting chemotherapy in the hope of extending her life.

The first symptoms she had were what she thought were piles just before Christmas.

“I attempted to self-medicate, but nothing worked,” Becky said. “I went to the doctors on February 6 and straight away was referred to hospital.

“It was on March 16 that I was told the cancer was terminal.

“It’s unlucky that I didn’t have a lot of symptoms so it could be diagnosed earlier.

“It’s turned everything upside down. I’ve gone from being a very much fit and healthy person to fighting for my life.

“It’s something that happens to people every day.”

Becky is continuing to work from home as the clerk of Crowland Parish Council and was the vice clerk role at Holbeach Parish Council.

Now the Holbeach WI Hall is putting on Becky’s Bucket List Bash on Saturday, May 30.

It hopes to raise money for costs associated with Becky’s treatment and extras to go towards the ‘bucket list’ request of a family holiday. The event will include live music, a charity auction and buffet. Tickets are £20 and available from 07544 147770.

“I want to go to Scotland with my family, mainly to spend time with my family and make more memories,” Becky said. “I don’t know how much time with them I’ve got left.

“I did want to go to Canada but I’m not going to get the insurance.”

Becky’s family includes husband Shaun, children Jade (31), Ben (30), Charlie (27), Leila (20) and then grandchildren Felix (4), Jasper (3) and Kayleigh (18 months). Another granddaughter to be named Madeline is due in July.

“I’ve always tried to do things for other people so it seems bizarre to be the other side of it. I didn’t realise how people would be so responsive. We’ve already raised quite a bit for charities Macmillan and Colostomy UK and the support has been amazing. It’s quite humbling. People really want to help out.”
