A minister spoke of his career as a taxi driver at a recent WI meeting.
The Tollgate WI welcomed Steve Weatherly-Barton, the chaplin of Johnson Hospital, chairman of the Friends group that raises money for that institution and minister of Gosberton and District Baptist Church.
In the talk ‘Confessions of a Taxi Driver’ Steve told those in attendance about his experiences in that profession after being overcome of the workload of being a minister.
He regaled the Wi and members of the Friends of Johnson Hospital with tales of his taxi driving days, including the time he asked someone he’d picked up from the vet how their cat was to be told the animal was dead and taking a Catholic priest to a gay bar because ‘it’s the only place where there won’t be a fight’.
On one occasion he picked up the former Bishop of Chester Michael Baughen who correctly prophesied he ‘wouldn’t drive a taxi forever’.
Christine Grocock, the secretary of the Friends of Johnson Hospital, said: “Steve acts as a pillar of support for both patients and the incredible nursing staff.
“He spoke passionately about how the Friends’ charity works tirelessly purchasing equipment that provides comfort to patients and makes the staff’s vital work just a little bit easier.
“We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Tollgate WI for their wonderful hospitality and for inviting Steve to speak.
“We are also deeply moved by their generous donation of £50, made in memory of Heather Chambers.
“Heather was a cherished member of both the WI and the Friends who passed away last year.
“This gift is a beautiful tribute to her legacy of service and community.
“It was a true pleasure meeting them all.”
