Spalding Hockey Club hosted the fourth of five primary school tournaments this school year at Glen Park, Surfleet on Friday.
Based on the results from previous tournaments, the teams were divided into four graded leagues, advanced, intermediate and two beginner leagues.
The advanced league was rescheduled with the late withdrawal of St John’s School but provided a number of highly competitive games.
Current title holders Monkshouse started strongly with a convincing win (3-0) over Boston based Tower Road A before beating newly promoted St Norbert’s (2-0).
Ayscoughfee A continue to emerge as a force at this level beating St Norbert’s A (3-0) and Tower Road A (3-1).
This set up a deciding clash between Ayscoughfee A and Monkshouse A for top spot honours.
In a competitive game, Ayscoughfee took an early lead with Monkshouse A equalising late on to save their unbeaten record this season.
Ayscoughfee A headed the table on account of their scoring more goals with both points and goal difference the same.
Tower Road B team took the honours in the intermediate league with four straight wins beating Surfleet Primary and John Harrox (both 5-0), St Thomas’s (3-0) and Spalding Parish (1-0).
Locals Surfleet Primary did themselves proud by finishing in second spot, their highest ever in this competition.
They beat John Harrox (3-1) and St Thomas’s A (3-2) before being held to a goal-less draw by Spalding Parish in their final game.
Having been promoted from the beginner B league, Monkshouse B demonstrated the strength in depth when they won the beginner A league without conceding a goal.
The team recorded wins over Gosberton Academy A (2-0) Eye Primary and Pinchbeck East (both 1-0) but were denied a full house being held to a goal-less draw by Tower Road C who finished in second place.
Gosberton Academy B enjoyed success in the low scoring beginner B league, recording wins over Ayscoughfee B (2-1) and St Thomas’s B (1-0) and drew with Tower Road D (1-1) and St Norbert’s B (0-0) to take top spot.
Tower Road D just pipped St Nobert’s B on goal difference with both teams having six points.
This year’s tournaments come to a head with the finals to be played at Glen Park on Friday, May 8.
