Cricketers hit out for charity

Over £500 was raised for local charities thanks to South Holland and the Deepings MP Sir John Hayes’ annual cricket match.

This year Moulton Harrox Irregulars beat Sir John’s House of Common’s XI to take the title.

Hosts Moulton posted 204 before Sir John’s XI closed on 183 in reply in the game where five runs were deducted for every wicket.

Sir John said that, as he does every year, he would meet with a representative from Moulton to decide which local charities should benefit from this year’s funds.

“It was a fantastic event,” he said. “There were a lot of people there and what was great was that it was such a wide range of people, from babies to people in their 80s.

“It was a real local event where the community came together.

“There was so much goodwill.”

It’s 25 years since the match was first held, only missing one year due to the 2020 lockdowns.

“The first time we played a bail was broken and that’s now been mounted and is used as the trophy,” Sir John said.

Moulton captain Dipan Suwarneraj was presented with the winning trophy by the chair of South Holland District Council Jan Whitbourn.

She said: “It was a brilliant day and so many people came to make it an amazing community event.

“Well done to Sir John and Lady Susan.”
