Long Sutton suffer disappointing defeat

Long Sutton’s hopes of avoiding a second consecutive relegation suffered a blow as they narrowly lost to Bourne 2nd XI.

The sides went into the game with only three points separating them in the South Lincs and Border League Championship, though Bourne moved out of the bottom two by claiming a two wicket victory.

Sutton had a horror start losing both their openers cheaply but Phil Barnes (18) and Tim Norris (58) provided the rebuild.

A nearly a run a ball 30 from Josh Baker was the highlight of the lower order, but the visitors were left 186 all out in the 42nd over.

Bourne opted to break the back of the run chase early with Ben Woodward (24 off 20) and William Gardner (71 off 70) putting the hosts in the ascendancy.

After Charlie Crisp (2/38) grabbed crucial wickets, including bowling Gardner, Tim Norris (3/25) got Sutton back into the game as Bourne fell eight down despite having plenty of overs in hand.

A chance of the arm of number 10 Jordan Grosse saw him hit 17 not out off 13 balls to give Bourne the win in the 39th over.
