Spalding succumb to heat in heavy defeats

The heat was on Spalding on Saturday but they wilted in the temperature with heavy defeats for both teams.

In the Lincolnshire Board Premier League, leaders Bracebridge Heath cruised to a 144-run success, while in Division Two of the South Lincs Border League Castor & Ailsworth emerged 269-run victors.

Any hopes the first team had of making it three wins on the bounce were quickly extinguished by the Lincolnshire Board Premier League front-runners as they rattled up 308/7 from their 50 overs. Things had started well with wickets for Matthew Key (1-46), Barnaby Dring (2-54) and Walter Kinlock (3-58) reducing the hosts to 72/3 but a 101-run fourth-wicket stand between Avisha Tharindu (93) and captain Alex Willerton (36), followed by a run-a-ball half century from Alex Moor (52) put Spalding on the back foot.

Captain Ollie Dring (8) and Jon Manton (27) put on 39 for the first wicket in reply but from 39/0 Spalding slumped to 67/4 before Chris Dring briefly lifted the visitors’ hopes with a swift 44. He fell at 135/8 with Elliot Humphreys (16) last man out at 164 in the 37th over.

Seconds captain Thomas Decamps won the toss at Castor & Ailsworth but his decision to make the hosts bat first backfired as they piled up 320/6.

When opener Josh Weaver was caught and bowled by Phil Lewis (3-44) for 42, Spalding thought they were in with a chance at 110/5.

Josh Fox (32) helped add another 61 runs but then it fell apart for the visitors as Ryan Evans (133no) and Luke Farrow (30no) teamed up to power their way to an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 149.

Spalding’s response ended in the 20th over with Decamps (14no) top scoring in their 51 all out. Six batsmen failed to score and two others managed just a single under attack from Stuart Dockerill (5-4) and Ben Adler (3-17).
