Captain’s efforts in vain

Only one Long Sutton team was in action at the weekend with no first-team game and Sunday’s Mid Norfolk League matches washed out by the rain.

It was left to the second team to fly the flag in Division One of the South Lincs Border League but they fell to a one-wicket win at home to Burghley Park Seconds, who hit a six to confirm victory.

Captain Aron John won the toss and was soon called into action at first wicket down. He held up his end admirably, scoring 64 with solid middle-order support from Jake Burton (39) and Philip Barnes (18).

Sutton used up all 45 overs to reach an all-out total of 184.

The varied home attack kept Burghley on their toes with five of the six bowlers enjoying wicket success. John led the way with 3-31, supported by Burton (2-36) and Charith Harshana (2-39) with a wicket apiece for Rob Simpson and Calvin Bird. However, that was not quite enough with no.10 bat Lewis Banthorpe proving frustrating with an unbeaten 20, including two sixes as his team reached 190/9 with one ball of the 42nd over remaining.
