A group of volunteers who cook a meal for the community every week might just be Holbeach’s best kept secret.
Every Friday the Holbeach Community Café is putting on a meal for attendees to enjoy.
There’s no cost, though a donation is requested.
The initiative began in 2013, continued as a delivery service throughout much of the Covid lockdowns, and continues to be hugely popular to those who attend.
“It’s just a way of bringing people together,” said Jane Francis who heads a team of 12 volunteers. “It’s grown and grown over the years.
“The majority of people who attend are over 75 but it’s open to anyone.
“It’s about providing what I call a proper homemade meal.
“There’s no charge because not everybody can afford it and we want to provide for everyone.
“We’ve kept it going through donations and if we’re in need of anything we try and get it through grant funding.
“For example we’ve developed a relationship with M&S and they helped provide money for a dishwasher.”
The Holbeach Community Café is a community interest company, so not allowed to make a profit.
It meets at The Reading Rooms in Holbeach which is open from 10.30am for tea and coffee before the meal is served at lunchtime.
They also put on meals for special occasions such as the King’s coronation and Christmas.
Jane would also love to hear from anybody who might want to volunteer with the café.
“Any cooks in particular would be welcome,” she said. “But we also have servers and still deliver to some customers.”
