Plans for two new artworks for Spalding commemorating its former animal market have been unveiled.
Leicestershire sculptor Graeme Mitcheson is to create artwork based on cattle for New Road and sheep for Sheep Market where they used to be sold.
They will be part of the Spalding Civic Society’s Mark-It trail celebrating what was and is sold in the town and it was announced at the group’s recent AGM.
Mr Mitcheson has commissioned numerous artworks including the statue of former England manager Sir Bobby Robson in Newcastle.
The Mark-It trail, which includes the already installed The Hiring in Hall Place, is being worked on with Transported Arts.
A spokesman for that group said: “At this early stage there will be further discussion and site visits before designs are finalised.
“As part of the commission, Graeme is hoping to run a series of stone carving workshops in multiple venues in the Spalding area. As well as offering the public the opportunity to discuss the sculpture with Graeme, they will have the opportunity to design and create a miniature stone artwork which they will be able to keep, a permanent souvenir of the project that will last for decades.
“If any community group or school is interested in hosting a workshop, they are asked to contact the society or Transported.”
A sculpture marking the sale of pigs in Red Lion Street is also being worked on.
“By reintroducing representations of sheep, cattle, and pigs into the town centre through sculptures and other artwork, the initiative not only aims to beautify the town but also to attract visitors, potentially boosting local tourism and foot traffic,” the spokesman continued.
