Barclays Bank to close Spalding branch

Barclays Bank has announced it is to close its Spalding branch.

The Hall Place bank announced on its website it will close on May 10, the bank says.

It says its taken the action as it had only 10 regular customers.

On the branch store’s page it states: “We’re permanently closing this branch from 12pm on Friday 10 May 2024. For more information, please go to home.barclays/ukbranchclosures

“We’ll continue to be part of your community in Spalding. We’re just finalising the arrangements of where and when we’ll be available to support you, and as soon as they are confirmed we’ll share the details.”

The bank confirmed it was closing a number of stores this week.

It has provided a document on the closure for customers which you can read here.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, with the majority of people preferring to bank online, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

“This is reflected in Spalding, where we are delivering new ways to support our customers and the community with options for those who need in-person services.”

“In Spalding, we plan to open a Barclays Local – a cashless banking site where customers can meet a colleague face-to-face for banking support, as they would in a branch and without the need to travel.

“We are currently working with the local community to identify a suitable location and will announce details once confirmed.”

A Barclays Local is ‘a flexible community presence in places such as town halls and libraries, mobile vans and banking pods’.

The spokesman continued: “Less than ten regular customers use this branch exclusively for their banking and do not interact with us in other ways.

“The branch closure will be in accordance with our regulatory obligations. All of our regular customers will receive a letter, our decision to close document and posters will be displayed in branch, and colleagues will be on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have.

“We will be proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally.

“We will be offering virtual digital support sessions for customers wishing to explore digital banking and other alternatives to branch based banking.”

With nearby branches at Bourne and Stamford closed, the nearest bank will be in Peterborough.

Coun Thomas Sneath said: “The announcement of Spalding’s Barclays Bank which has been at the centre of Spalding banking hub for decades, comes as a total shock to myself and will be for its customers.

“Will this be the end of high street banks as we know them? And what will become of the buildings?”
