Riley’s marathon effort for epilepsy

Walking a mile a day every day in August has helped 12-year-old Riley Holloway raise money and awareness for the Epilepsy Society.

Riley, who has just started in Year Seven at Spalding Academy, decided to take on the challenge in honour of his five-year-old brother Freddy, who has the condition.
Riley, who lives in Pinchbeck, has set himself a target of £500 and so far has raised £345, which he’s very happy with.
On his Just Giving page Riley says: “I personally find this a very emotional topic and I am trying to spread awareness over it.
“I have decided to do a run to raise money for a charity named Epilepsy Society, a charity in which helps all people suffering from epilepsy.
“Freddy was only nine months old before having his first seizure – he started shaking in his highchair I asked innocently ‘is he meant to be shaking like that?’ All of a sudden my mum took him out of his highchair and called 999, two ambulances came to our house. His seizure finally stopped once he was at the hospital after an hour and ten minutes.
“Freddy was finally diagnosed with epilepsy not long after his second birthday.
“He is now a happy healthy five-year-old thanks to his medication and the research behind epilepsy. He attends regular appointments and has his medication increased when needed to keep his seizures at bay.
“Because of this I have decided to run just over a marathon (a mile a day for 30 days) throughout August in aid of epilepsy society.”
Riley’s mum Stacey Gilbert said: “I’m so proud of him.
“He just sat there one night and said he wanted to do something to raise funds and awareness so I helped him set up the Just Giving page and he’s done the rest himself.
“It was quite a commitment for him to do a mile every day but he just got out there and did it either first thing in the morning or later, he fitted it around his days throughout the summer holidays.”
