I reply to Mr Sadd’s letter dated June 15 and the question raised in his second paragraph, one answer is very simple.
These older citizens have only themselves to blame.
Had, and assuming many of these fictitious millions worked during their working life, they should have made some provision for their old age.
Instead, if they have spent their entire lives skiving, boozing, smoking, gambling, scrounging, cruising, taking two or more holidays each year, and generally leading the high life on the basis they have rights and both the state and well meaning charities will look after them, all at other people’s expense, they have now reaped what they did not sow.
This is not a new revelation and I accept that among them will be many genuine cases of hardship who deservedly require and qualify for state assistance and social intervention etc.
Contrary to Mr Sadd’s impression, this country is not yet like a third world country under the control of a crackpot dictator or a regime who simply has yearnings for the equal division of unequal earnings.
I wish the convention well.
