Young cricketers hitting their stride

Those at Spalding Town Cricket Club are a hive of enthusiasm this season, in part thanks to the vast junior set up that’s offering the sport to all ages and backgrounds.

The club have been looking to get everyone involved in the junior section in particular and get even more young cricketers through the ranks.
1st XI captain Jonny Manton, wicketkeeper Ethan Lawrence, opening bowler and Leicestershire U19s wicket keeper Ollie Dring, ladies’ captain and Lincolnshire Ladies’ opening bowler Macey Andrews and Leicestershire U18s bowler Harry Biehler-Birch plus 2nd XI bowler Thomas Decamps have all been giving their time to give something back to the junior section that has helped them over the years.
The club’s John Birch said: “Along with the coaches Carl Andrews, Chris Dring, Paul Lawrence, Gemma Frascella and Michael Morris we just want to get the word out that you can come and play from five years and upwards.
“We’ve started our All Stars cricket program for the season aimed at ages five to eight.
“The majority of our boys and girls started out through this.
“It is a fun and exciting entry level into cricket that we along with clubs all around the country put on for the children.
“Elsewhere in the club, training sessions take place on Friday evenings at the Seas End Hall.
“With the uptake in ladies’ sport we have been for a number of years running a ladies’ team and encourage the younger girls to participate in our age appropriate teams.
“We are always looking for more girls to join our sessions.
“We have a great ethos at the club of investing in our junior section but most of all it’s about having fun and you never know, we might unearth a diamond.”
Spalding’s junior training sessions at Hall Lane in Moulton Seas End are 6-7pm for Under 9s, 6-7.30pm for U11s, 7-8pm for U13s and 7.30pm-8.30pm for U15s.
The clubhouse will also be open during sessions.
