Call for more solar panels on council houses

Putting more solar panels on council homes is not “cost effective nor practical” it’s been claimed.

Resident David Jones asked if it was something South Holland District Council were looking at in a recent meeting of the Spalding Town Forum.

Coun Christine Lawton, SHDC’s portfolio holder for finance, said: “We are doing the best with the government’s agenda installing equipment but with all housing properties, many of which are a considerable age, it would just not be cost effective and practical.

“Many don’t have the capacity for that.

“With the new housing they’d be ideal for solar panels.

“We’re always following a green agenda where we can but it’s a costly investment and there’s only so much we can do.

“I’ll chase up to see if there’s any pilot schemes which we might be able to utilise.”

Mr Jones said his solar panels had paid for themselves in seven years. “I hope somebody is thinking about it,” he responded.
