Tulips boss in marathon effort

Spalding United manager Brett Whaley is to run the London Marathon in April alongside his wife Claire.

The pair are raising money for Tommy’s, a charity that provides support for parents of premature and still born babies as well as funding research into their causes.

Their fundraising is inspired by the Tommy’s help after their nephew Harry Waltonwas born prematurely at 31 weeks.

“I was lucky enough to get a place for the charity after seeing their amazing work for people at such a difficult time,” Brett said. “Harry’s six now. It was very scary at the time, but when you see first hand what a charity does, it really hits home.

“Claire works as a midwife in Peterborough too and knows all about Tommy’s.

“We both just wanted to give something back and do something together.”

The Tulips are enjoying their best season in years under Whaley who has been in charge since November 2021.

He has had his own injury problems but training is progressing ahead of the 26.2 mile run in April.

“I broke my toe just before Christmas running,” he said. “So Claire’s a little bit ahead of me, but otherwise training is going OK.

“We’re looking forward to making some decent money for the charity and hopefully make a difference.”
