Many debuts at inter-schools tournament

Spalding Hockey Club hosted the first of five primary school hockey tournaments at Glen Park, Surfleet.
Nineteen teams from 12 primary schools took part in with many of the 150 plus participants making their hockey debuts.
The teams were split into four leagues with the aim of working towards graded leagues through the school year.
After a cagey start with the first three games being drawn, it was Eye Primary who pulled away with wins over Boston’s Tower Road (2-1) and John Harrox A (2-0). They were held to goalless draws by Monks House and Ayscoughfee but that was enough for them to finish top of the league.
Monks House registered an excellent win (3-1) over Ayscoughfee and drew their other three matches to end up in second place.
On pitch B, the league was dominated by Boston-based Tower Road B and St Thomas’s.
Tower Road B took the honours with three wins over St John’s (1-0), Pinchbeck East (2-0) and Monks House B (3-0) but were held to a goalless draw by their Boston counterparts.
St Thomas’s were impressive in their victories over Monks House B (2-0) and St John’s (4-0) but stumbled to a defeat (0-1) at the hands of Pinchbeck East in the final game.
Four teams competed on pitch C with Gosberton Risegate in command.
Risegate impressed in all of their three wins over St Norbert’s (1-0), Gosberton Academy A (1-0) and Surfleet Primary (2-0) to top the league.
Surfleet worked hard for victories over Risegate A (2-0) and St Norbert’s (2-0) to finish second.
The schools’ B teams contested the five-team pitch D league.
Tower Road C finished top with wins over Ayscoughfee B and Eye Primary B (both 1-0) and goalless draws with Gosberton Academy B and John Harrox B.
Eye Primary B took second with a victory over Ayscoughfee B (2-0) and three drawn games.
