Late Norton penalty ends Spalding United’s FA Cup run

Spalding United’s exciting run in the FA Cup ended on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at Evo-Stik League First Division South rivals Norton United.

Glynn Blackhurst put the hosts ahead on 14 minutes in Staffordshire, but an own goal from Tom Winkle levelled matters ten minutes before the break.

The tie looked set to go to a replay as the scores remained level for much of the second period, but disaster struck when Winkle was fouled by Nathan Stainfield eight minutes from time.

Tom Fogg duly dispatched the penalty past Michael Duggan to secure a £4,500 payday for Norton and a place in the third qualifying round.

Elsewhere, Yaxley leapfrogged Holbeach United to go top of the UCL Premier Division table.

With the Tigers not in action, the Cuckoos’ 4-1 home win over Oadby saw them go a point ahead of Graham Drury and John Chand’s side, having played a game more.

Meanwhile, both Moulton Harrox and Pinchbeck were on winning form in the ChromaSport Peterborough League.

Harrox roared to a 5-3 success at Langtoft United, while Pinchbeck saw off Uppingham Town 2-0 at Knight Street.
