New table tennis trophy honours Maurice’s legacy

The life of Spalding and District Table Tennis League legend Maurice Chilvers has been honoured by a new trophy.

The former member and chairman, often referred to as Tony, was one of the league’s longest serving figures before his death this summer.

To mark his association with the league, Maurice’s nephew Murray Chilvers and relative Ivan Croft, who have been looking after his affairs, presented the league with a new trophy in his memory.

As yet, the committee have not met to determine how it may be used – but the donors have given the league carte blanche to use it both within and outside of the league to promote the game.

Meanwhile, the league is now rapidly moving closer to the start of the new season.

Last Wednesday saw a good turnout at the Castle Sports Complex, with all tables in use.

The new season is gradually coming together, with six teams – so far – set for Division One and eight sides in Division Two.

It is hoped that the league may have a couple more for the top flight before the kick-off.

More certain is that there will be two new players in the league, with the possibility of up to four returnees as well. There has also been some changes to the teams from last season, with pairings reforming in different ways.
There are still one or two teams looking for third or fourth players to cover for absences.

Anyone not registered and wanting to play should come down on Wednesday nights (7.30pm) or contact the secretary, whose details may be found at www.spald
