Whaley philosophical after seeing his Spalding United side beaten by visitors Coleshill Town

Boss Brett Whaley admitted that he’s learning a lot about his Spalding United players after seeing their winless run in Pitching In NPL Midlands Division stretch to five games on Saturday.

The Tulips were soundly beaten by visitors Coleshill Town on Saturday, with first-half goals from Isai Marsilla (18) and Kai Tonge (pen 38) giving the visitors all three points at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

Whaley, who tinkered with his formation and used his squad to give some fringe players more game time, felt that the result was the right one on the day as his side slipped to 12th.

“I’m disappointed by the result and performance,” said Whaley. “But, to their credit, Coleshill are a good side.

“We’re using these remaining games to have a better look at the players with next season in mind.

“We tried a new formation and shuffled the pack a bit and it didn’t quite work out.

“For me, these are the games when you learn a lot about your players.

“It’s easy when you’re winning games. But, when you’re on a bad run, it’s good to see how players respond.

“It’s obvious that our lack of consistency has cost us this season.

“Next year, we want to be pushing on at the top end of the table and we’re going to need different options and ways to make sure this kind of losing run doesn’t happen.

“I’d rather see this kind of performance now than at the end of pre-season.”

Tulips: Duggan, Floyd (Edge 47), Marshall, Bucci (Hart 46), Stainfield, Cartwright, Koroma, Broccoli, Smith, Starkie, Seymour-Shove (Nassunculo 75). Not used: Adams, Lynch.

Attendance: 168.
