Bakers rise up for charity

Vicar Jane Sivers proved to be the queen of the cakes as hundreds was raised for charity at The Great Lizzie Bake Off on Saturday.

The baking competition at The Elizabethan Centre in Whaplode Drove proved a success with 18 people taking part.

Four independent judges took on the tough task of tasting all of the delicious entries on Saturday, February 19.

They decided the vicar’s strawberry gateaux was best, just edging out the Union flag cupcakes baked by Sarah Brand who helped organise the event alongside Coun Paul Redgate.

The centre’s David Barfoot handed out the awards, home made by Kevin Barfoot, with £230 having been raised for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.

“The event went really well and it was particularly nice to do something we’d never done before,” David said. “We were amazed at the amount of entrants.

“Some of the judges said they’d had so much delicious cake they didn’t want to see another again for a long time.

“It’s something we are looking to do again, possibly annually and maybe in the summer.”
